Why Turkey Point works as a base
- The beach is across the road. Our cottages are steps from Turkey Point Beach, so there’s no parking hunt and no packing up the car every time someone needs a snack or a nap.
- It’s made for families in the water. Norfolk County describes Turkey Point Beach as long and shallow with many sand bars, “ideal for families”, and there’s a buoyed area for children. There’s still no lifeguard, so keep little ones close.
- Evenings are calmer. There’s no downtown in Turkey Point. Most nights mean the deck, the fire table or a walk on the sand, with a few restaurants within walking distance.
- You’re between two areas. Port Dover is about 20–25 minutes east. Head west instead and the Front Road wineries and Long Point Eco-Adventures in St. Williams are about 10 minutes away. See our area guide for the full list.
Why stay in Turkey Point and visit Port Dover
- A longer, quieter beach across the road. Turkey Point’s roughly two-kilometre beach has long, shallow water and many sand bars, while Port Dover’s public beach section is small and can get busy.
- Parking at the cottage. Park once and walk to the sand. No hunting for spots in town.
- Quiet nights. Enjoy Port Dover by day, then retreat from the Friday the 13th crowds to a calm evening on the deck.
- More nearby. The Front Road wineries and Long Point Eco-Adventures in St. Williams are about 10 minutes away.
Tip: many Turkey Point businesses are seasonal, so check hours if you’re coming outside summer.
A Port Dover day trip from Turkey Point
Here’s an easy plan that keeps the drive to two short hops.
Morning: pier and lighthouse. Have breakfast at the cottage, then drive over and walk down to the harbour. The Port Dover West Pier Lighthouse stands at the end of the west pier at the entrance to the harbour. Parks Canada describes it as a square, tapered wood-frame tower and designated it a heritage lighthouse in 2014. The Port Dover Harbour Authority can close the pier gate in bad weather, such as high winds, waves or ice, so follow posted signs.
Late morning: Harbour Museum. The Port Dover Harbour Museum at 44 Harbour Street focuses on Port Dover’s commercial fishing heritage. When we checked in October 2026 it was open Wednesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with free parking. Confirm hours before you go.
Lunch: back in Turkey Point. Drive back and eat at the cottage, or walk to the beach strip: our things to do guide lists the restaurants near the cottages.
Afternoon: beach time. Port Dover Beach is right by the pier, but Ontario’s Southwest notes the public section is small and can get busy. Turkey Point gives you a longer stretch of sand across the road from the cottage.
Evening: theatre or the deck. In summer, Lighthouse Festival stages professional theatre in Port Dover’s historic old town hall on Main Street. Or skip the second drive and grill on the deck at the cottage.

- Dogs (except clearly identifiable service dogs)
- Alcohol: consuming, serving or selling

Friday the 13th: plan around it
For more than 40 years, motorcyclists have come to Port Dover every Friday the 13th. The event is run by the Kinsmen Club of Port Dover and the Port Dover Board of Trade, with Norfolk County handling safety and traffic. The next date listed by both the county and pd13.com is Friday, November 13, 2026.
For recent events, the county has closed parts of downtown to traffic, including sections of Main Street, and posted an event map with parking areas and detours. If you’re staying in Turkey Point:
- Leave extra time for the drive and expect detours into town.
- Check the Norfolk County PD13 page for the current map and closures.
- Plan a designated driver. The county asks visitors to drink responsibly and drive sober.
We’ll publish a full Friday the 13th guide closer to the date.
